Distracted by the Diamonds

But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!” – Luke 10:40

When Jesus came to visit Mary & Martha, Mary sat at his feet and listened while Martha was busy trying to impress Jesus. He even points out ““Martha, dear Martha, you’re fussing far too much and getting yourself worked up over nothing. One thing only is essential, and Mary has chosen it—it’s the main course, and won’t be taken from her.”

Jesus is basically telling her she’s missing the point and all the important stuff. Boy, is this not true? Especially in today’s world of busy, busy, busy. We totally miss it. Instead of talking to family and friends, our heads are buried in our “smart” phones (I use that term loosely and tongue-in-cheek). Meanwhile, life is passing us by as we struggle to keep it all together.

Many years ago my son and I went to a mall in search of shoes for him. I kept stopping at jewelry kiosks and admiring the bracelets, rings, earrings and such. At one point, he pulled my hand and said in a very frustrated voice, “Mom… please. We’re here to buy shoes and you’re getting distracted by the diamonds”. What a profound statement from an 8 year-old.

We have to really be mindful that we can so easily get caught up in doing and not living. The enemy loves to use busyness to keep us away from God and each other. Once you’re aware of the time we spend doing meaningless tasks, you will make a concerted effort to use our time wisely.
